Say No to Unwanted Bags
Refuse, Reuse, Reduce, Recycle
- for a greener East Dulwich
in collaboration with Revolutions Cycling
Our exciting recycle a bike project is under way, offering 20 sessions over 5 months from September 2011 to February 2012.
We have involved 16 young people to date through our refurbishment program, with a regular attendance of 7–9 per session. Sessions are held at Stables Workshop, 173 Lordship Lane, London SE22 8HA.
We have refurbished 19 bikes so far and 6 of the participants have received their own bikes through the ‘earn a bike' scheme.
We have sold some of the bikes and we had a further 15 ready to be sold at the end of January 2012 at our sale day.
Also in January, we held Dr Bike at the Peckham Rye adventure playground and used some of our participants to help check and fix an estimated 30 bikes. We are in talks with the organisers at this community facility regarding running a further project as part of an ‘outreach’ from our initial scheme.
We have built relationships with the local police who are supplying more bikes from their property store. Through links with London Re Use network we have secured a further 30 donation bikes, as well as 20 through public donations.
Applications are being made for further funding to continue our project for a further year.
Plans can then be made to provide recycle a bike services to local schools during school time as part of alternative curriculum. Many thanks to the London Cycling Campaign for enabling this to happen.
We are looking for 12 to 17 year-olds to work with the project.
Our workshop times are advertised on Stewart Vann's website (www.revolutionscycling.co.uk). Please call Stewart on 07715 172 602 if you would like to attend. You can also check Stewart's Twitter feed here.
