Bikes for the community 2011

Supported by the London Cycling Campaign

The project will look to DIVERT bikes from landfill and local police storage to the project. Instructors will work with local young teenagers and their parents to EDUCATE them in cycle maintenance. These trainees will learn while REFURBISHING donated and unclaimed bikes from the local police stations. A number of the bikes will be sold to the public at affordable prices and the money re-invested in our projects. We will hold two sale days in December in the run up to Christmas and the group will help with the sales. Some of the bikes will be used for other community bike projects we have planned. After attending six sessions the youths can then pick a bike of their own to refurbish with the EARN a BIKE scheme. We will also be offering DR Bike sessions to the public and the youngsters will check and service the bikes supported by the instructors. The youngsters will be encouraged to take up cycle training lessons to be able to cycle to school.

Dulwich Community garden 2011

Sponsored by London Groundwork and McGovern Carpentry

East Dulwich SNUB and the vale residents association are working with Dulwich Hospital to install a physic garden by the hospital entrance. The garden is a community garden, built by the community, for the community. The hospital itself wants to promote a sense of wellbeing, and what better way, then to have a space where the hospital users have a place nearby to sit, rest and enjoy the garden.Having access to the hospital grounds is a great opportunity to make use of the spaces around the grounds, and promote well being. Green spaces are becoming less available, so we need to encourage and enhance what we do have.
